Comment:

 I considered that, but I didn't make it a variant for two reasons.

 First, it was not immediately apparent to me how to prevent giflib from
 requiring xmlto. If you know how, let me know.

 Second, the "nice documentation" isn't just html files, which might
 conceivable be considered optional; it's also manpages, which I view as
 more essential.

 Oddly, though it seems to require xmlto at build time and always generates
 the manpages and html docs, it didn't automatically install them, so I
 copied them manually in post-destroot.
