 I've heard from upstream and it turns out the using the command:

 {{{
 nosetests -exe matplotlib
 }}}

 isn't the correct way of running the tests, as `matplotlib` has `nose`
 extensions that running them using the above doesn't load the extensions
 hence the errors. If you run:

 {{{
 python -c "import matplotlib; matplotlib.test()"
 }}}

 then I expect the testsuite will pass.
