 Hi, sorry for the confusing statement. Reinstallation of 'docbook-xml'
 seemed to go well, but I would still get the same error on reinstalling
 tex-live, again with 'docbook-xml'. So apparently installation did not go
 correctly.

 In short: the problem was with both installing and uninstalling of
 docbook-xml.

 In the mean time I have done:

 {{{
 port selfupdate
 port upgrade outdated
 port clean --all installed
 port -f uninstall inactive
 port clean --all all
 }}}

 And now installation of texlive (and thus docbook-xml) is going right. The
 first two statements I had already tried before, so one of the last three
 commands did the trick. I can't say which, as I ran them in sequence.

 My problem is solved, but if you need any logfiles to see if you can find
 the rootcause for bughunting, I am willing to provide!
