 You shouldn't need to install apple-gcc42, since Apple's gcc-4.2 is
 included with Xcode 3.1. You definitely don't want gcc42 since that is the
 "vanilla" FSF version without any of Apple's patches.

 So ram's suggested command in comment:2 wasn't quite right; it should have
 been:
 {{{
 sudo port install py27-matplotlib configure.compiler=gcc-4.2
 }}}
