 Petsc now builds for me.  It seems deactivating atlas did the trick.

 I also installed openmpi @1.6.3_0+gcc47 (whereas before I had installed
 openmpi @1.6.3_0+gcc45) prior to deactivating atlas.  The openmpi change
 did not make a difference though.
