 I don't think that my experience is relevant to the original problem
 report but it may be to some of the other commenters, so I hope nobody
 minds me posting here. I was experiencing hangs during `port install
 <portname>` for various ports when run from a `sudo -s` shell inside
 `tmux`. When I just ran `sudo port install <portname>` from a non-root
 shell for the same ports then the install completed without hanging. So
 something to do with running from a root shell or running inside `tmux`
 was causing the hangs for me.
