 I'm not familiar with subports, and I'm having trouble finding
 documentation for it.

 I'd be happy to have it installed always. I suspect the git maintainers
 will move it into git-core proper in the near future (though it's still in
 contrib/ in v1.8.0) since it seems to be rapidly gaining traction these
 days.

 Would you like me to make a patch for it to be always installed?
