 The solution to pextlib generating "short" checksums for the dist files
 was to

 export CFLAGS=-fwide-exec-charset=UTF-16exit

 before running the configure script. I'm now successfully running MacPorts
 2.1.2.

 I consider this problem solved, the ticket can be closed.
