 I was trying to install octave. That depends on metis, apparently.
 Installing metis fails. I uninstalled octave and metis (or whatever was
 left of it after I interrupted installation after an hour), and then again
 tried installing metis. It failed in the same way. See the error messages
 in the attachment.

 I'm running Mac OS 10.6.8. I failed to find out what version of Xcode i'm
 using; if anybody can tell me how to find out then I'll check that.
