 For give me, I guess I was being slow this morning.

 I forgot it is possible to make sudo not require a password for a single
 command, not only just globally. So I could make it so my update script
 didn't require a password, which I could then run as myself in crontab. If
 this is what you mean, then yes I agree this is perfectly reasonable.
