 I had the same problem with Xcode 4.2 (clang) on Snow Leopard. Applying a
 [http://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/current/pkgsrc/devel/devIL/patches
 /patch-include_IL_il.h patch from NetBSD] works for me.
