Comment:

 I am also under the impression that having the current version of the ld64
 port installed is causing various problems for other software. See #36068
 for a problem with wine-devel which appears to be similar to the above:
 {{{
 ld: file is universal (2 slices) but does not contain a(n) i386 slice:
 /usr/lib/crt1.10.6.o for architecture i386
 }}}
 I myself am unable to upgrade apple-gcc42 today, seeing errors like this:
 {{{
 ld: warning: ignoring file libgcc/./_negdi2_s.o, file was built for
 unsupported file format ( 0xcf 0xfa 0xed 0xfe 0x 7 0x 0 0x 0 0x 1 0x 3 0x
 0 0x 0 0x 0 0x 1 0x 0 0x 0 0x 0 ) which is not the architecture being
 linked (x86_64): libgcc/./_negdi2_s.o
 ld: warning: ignoring file libgcc/./_muldi3_s.o, file was built for
 unsupported file format ( 0xcf 0xfa 0xed 0xfe 0x 7 0x 0 0x 0 0x 1 0x 3 0x
 0 0x 0 0x 0 0x 1 0x 0 0x 0 0x 0 ) which is not the architecture being
 linked (x86_64): libgcc/./_muldi3_s.o
 }}}

 I do have ld64 installed universal if that matters, and I'm on Mountain
 Lion.
