 I'm having this problem as well. I tried the workaround suggested by
 drowe, and while it eliminates that error, I am now unable to open or
 export any format other than xcf. I tried openeing a PNG and it complained
 that it was an unknown file type, and when I tried exporting an image, the
 filetype chooser was empty.
