 Well gcc42 doesn't build on Leopard, so we need to do something about
 that.

 I believe gcc47 still does not build on darwin/ppc, but it's a long thread
 in #34385.  It looks like someone at the end has been able to build it,
 but I don't have a ppc machine available to try it out on...
