 Success! I am now able to run KMyMoney.

 It turned out that as I had Homebrew installed previously, when I removed
 it and installed MacPorts, it did not uninstall all of the old state.

 OS X was trying to start dbus with Homebrew's configuration files... As
 soon as I located and removed all of the Homebrew related files, KMyMoney
 started working.
