 I have updated to the 2.7.4_rc1 XQuartz version, and I can confirm that
 this fixes the issue with the 3D viewer for me (which for reference is
 under Event -> 3D View).

 So this issue at least is fixed in this updated.

 Just to address an issue Angelo sent me in private, I have no issue with
 this XQuartx version starting automatically when required.
