 BTW: I have a

 $ port select --show gcc
 The currently selected version for 'gcc' is 'mp-gcc48'.
 $

 Why not to use just "gcc" without specifying the version?  Why has this
 ticket been changed to "add a gcc48 variant?  Just to open another ticket
 when the next gcc version will be released?
