 Thanks for your help. I did as you instructed and did a "sudo port clean
 all" and then tried to reinstall nagios-plugins and got the same error. I
 then switched my DNS from OpenDNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) to
 google's public DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4), cleaned all ports again and was
 then able to successfully install the nagios-plugins port. So, this may be
 more of a OpenDNS issue than a Macports issue.
 Thanks again for your help. Sorry for making a pigs ear out of the initial
 ticket.
