 I've done another port selfupdate followed by upgrade outdated and
 installed the following ports you suggested:

 {{{
 atlas +gcc48
 fftw-3 +gcc48
 fftw-3-single +gcc48
 SuiteSparse +atlas
 }}}

 I am not very familial how port 'variants' work. Do I need to uninstall
 others? How do I rebuild octave to use new variants?
 It would be helpful if you give me some sample commands to execute.

 Right now, after installing these ports, 'test strread' in Octave still
 gives errors.
