 As far as I can tell, the problem is occurring because the zlib port uses
 the xcodeversion portgroup; the xcodeversion portgroup accesses the
 xcodeversion variable, which causes MacPorts base to try to fill in the
 value of that variable by running `xcodebuild -version`, but for some
 reason on your system that's failing with that error message. So I want to
 verify, by having you run that command manually, that it also fails.
 Assuming it does, we need to figure out how to fix your `xcodebuild`
 program. You could try reinstalling the Xcode command line tools.
