 I did not notice that the default variants were being picked up. Thanks
 for the heads up.

 So the difference of my set of variants to the default on is:
 `+fftw3+pythia+python27`. I checked, and adding any of the three variants
 triggers the full compilation and the error.

 How can I force the compilation for the default variants?
