 The regular expression call should have escaped the + characters.
 Nevertheless, putting such characters in you path is just asking for
 trouble. If you want to contribute a patch, I'd be happy to include it,
 but I am not going to write one.

 You're right. We just had a user report this when using '+' in the
 PETSC_ARCH but I see this needs to be fixed with PETSC_DIR as well. I'll
 fix it later t his weekend in petsc-dev.
