Comment:

 We know that smake (and ports that use smake) ignore build errors, then
 proceed to the destroot phase and of course fail there. It's dumb but
 that's how smake works.

 The real problem to solve in this case is "ld: library not found for
 -lintl". Do you have the gettext port installed? I do, and it builds fine
 for me on OS X 10.8 and 10.5. I think smake probably just needs a library
 dependency on the gettext port (and an increase in revision).
