Comment:

 Thank you for the report. I did not notice this as I also have the
 binutils port installed. Due to the order of the include paths,
 `-I/opt/local/include -I/opt/local/avr/host/include` the build system
 actually picked the wrong `bfd.h` on my system. Thus, I did not notice the
 problem.

 I am aware that target programming is deprecated, but some older scripts
 in use at my department still require the target programming of avarice. I
 don't think enabling this feature will do any harm (once the build
 problems are resolved).
