 btw I just looked up the LaunchServices error code in

 Apple's documentation for it]; apparently it's an unknown error:

 ||= kLSUnknownErr =||= -10810 ||= An unknown error has occurred. Available
 in OS X v10.0 and later. =||

 So that neither confirms nor denies my theory that it happened because it
 was being run by a non-logged-in user...
