and libstdcxx do this for instance). The root port should then be updated
with a new variant that depends on this new xrootd port, and sets the
relevant configure options to use it. This has the advantage that xrootd
can evolve at its own pace (although some degree of coordinate between the
two ports might be useful), and both ports can be installed with or
without the other, if required.
This would be a good place for a subport (i.e., adding `xrootd` as a
subport of `ROOT`).
