 It’s probably not a wise idea, but setting

 macportsuser            root

 in macports.conf works around the problem.

 Another way to work around the problem seems to be to set macportsuser to
 a user with sudo privileges, create a group with the same name as that
 user and add the user to the group, and change ownership (recursively) of
 /opt/local/var/macports to that user.
