 it used to work until recently. the mac dev made some recent change that
 broke it after years of working. but because the mac dev doesn't
 understand the unix build system, nor does he care about the daemon mode,
 and because the main dev doesn't have a mac, it's unlikely they'll get
 around to fixing it.
