 I got gperf to install using a fresh MacPorts intallation.  I'm guessing
 the problem was due to trying to build gperf using un-updated MacPorts
 tools (gcc?).  Too late now, but I suspect I would've been able to get it
 to install properly simply by removing MacPorts installation prefix from
 PATH.
