 Here is the situation, judging from my own experience and those of others
 on the XCrySDen email list: on Snow Leopard, XCrySDen worked fine with
 mesa 7.11. On Lion, XCrySDen with mesa > 7.0.2 would run, but be more or
 less unusable due to flickering of the graphics. On Mountain Lion,
 XCrySDen with mesa > 7.0.2 (or GL from /usr/X11R6/lib,
 /System/Library/Frameworks/OpenGL.framework/Libraries, or /opt/X11/lib)
 crashes on initializing the window with an error of the form:

 X Error of failed request:  BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
   Major opcode of failed request:  3 (X_GetWindowAttributes)
   Resource id in failed request:  0xffffffff
   Serial number of failed request:  566
   Current serial number in output stream:  567

 Specifically I tried mesa 8.0.4 and 7.11.2. I tried to use some earlier
 versions of mesa but had trouble building them. It certainly would be
 preferable to use current mesa rather than a separate old version, but I
 was not able to figure out how. If anyone has suggestions of what might be
 the trouble or how to proceed in debugging, I'll give it a try. I do know
 that the problems with mesa 8 are not essential since mesa 8 works on
 Ubuntu with XCrySDen.
