 I seem to have found the issue: atlas was already installed +nofortran,
 for reasons long forgotten, and I had never bothered to check. I installed
 atlas +gcc48 (build kept stalling with the default +mpclang33); both
 arpack variants now work. That's embarrassing. Please close this ticket
 with my apologies.
