 sorry i didn't get back 2 u...worked around it by manually d/l'ing the tar
 & sticking it where it was expected:

 mv ~mysql-5.1.71.tar.gz /opt/local/var/macports/distfiles/mysql51/

 and the build picked up from there...until it bombed again;-(
