 Apologies for the delay in replying.

 HOWEVER, this info may not be relevant, because a couple of day back I
 deleted MacPorts completely (which I've done before) but this time I also
 deleted /opt/local. Then downloaded a fresh copy of the installer and
 installed it. Then I tried sudo port install ffmpeg, with success. Perhaps
 the new install corrected the problem with libass or pkgconfig? Whatever
 it was, ffmpeg now works fine.
