 Well, after a brief 4 month delay, I think I have addressed all of the
 bullet points. I couldn't get file downloads from multiple sites to work
 with the github portgroup but it looks like the only downside to not using
 that is a weirdly named worksrcdir. All downloads now occur during fetch
 and have checksums.
