 Just upgraded and tested it out, and yes, it is still a problem. I set
 XDG_CONFIG_DIR myself in an initalization file in .xinit.d, and that fixes
 it. Alternatively, it will look for a config file in ${HOME}/.config,
 which is where I put my customized Awesome configuration.

 Not sure if there is something else that should be setting the config dir
 explicitly. I don't use the Gnome desktop, just straight-up X11 and start
 the WM as the final initialization step.
