 It's actually pretty likely that these `.la` files caused the issue – they
 are no longer there after Migration, because MacPorts on 10.9 doesn't
 install them anymore. They cause more trouble for us than they solve.

 However, partially deleting them can cause these problems you saw – so
 that's likely what happened here.
