 This turns out to be a recently introduced regression that causes
 configure to ignore the libsmbclient CFLAGS and LDFLAGS.  I have verified
 that it has been fixed in upstream git master and a new 2.5.1 release is
 underway this morning which will include the fix.  libsmbclient support
 should be back with this new release in a day or so.
