 If this is still an issue, can you do:
 {{{
 sudo port clean octave
 sudo port selfupdate
 sudo port install octave
 }}}
 and see if it works now. I'm guessing some recent checkin messed up the
 dports dependencies, and hopefully that's been fixed by now.
