Comment:

 I hadn't previously realized that nettle used openssl, because it does not
 link with openssl's libraries, but it does appear to use its headers at
 build time. I can confirm that nettle fails to build on Mac OS X 10.5 when
 the openssl port is not installed. It builds fine on OS X 10.9 when the
 openssl port is not installed. So sometime between 10.5 and 10.9 the
 version of openssl included with the operating system must've gotten
 updated to a newer version.
