 Does anything else fail ? What if instead of running the demo you just try
 starting a new TBrowser, e.g.

 {{{
  new TBrowser();
 }}}

 at the ROOT prompt ?

 Do you have anything custom in your ~/.rootrc file ? If so can you try
 moving that out the way.
