New description:

 I am running Mac OS X 10.9.3 with all current updates as of 6/18/2014
 I have installed Xcode 5.1.1

 I have manually installed the XCode Command Line Tools, installed other
 MacPorts tools: wget +ssl, lftp, db46, gcc48, hdf5-18 +gcc48, hdf4 +gcc48
 and then when trying to install:

 netcdf +dap +hdf4+ netcdf4
 }}}

 I get an error that it cannot be compiled. I have attached the error
 output, the "main.log" and the "compile.log" files.

Comment:

 In the future, please use WikiFormatting and Cc the port maintainers
 ({{{port info --maintainers netcdf}}}).

 It looks like it fails with the {{{hdf4}}} variant. The other variants
 install for me on Mavericks.
