 I did figure out what was wrong. It deals with MacPorts an not gawk in
 particular.
 I had moved /opt/local to ~/local  and did a symbolic link from ~/local to
 /opt
 The purpose of this was to make sure that local gets backed up by time
 machine.
 Changing this somehow causes the problem to occur.  I do not know if you
 wish to fix this.
