 The dependency is totally optional (I don't know what it's used for), it's
 small (the compressed binary package is 54K) and has no further
 dependencies on its own. So maybe I should just include it
 unconditionally.

 Yes, I'd just add the dependency.  My understanding is that it adds
 additional scripting commands based on the functionality of libcerf.  One
 of the included demos, cerf.dem, illustrates this usage.
