 I am looking into this. There doesn't appear to be any problem upgrading
 guile to 2.0.x or moving to a guile18 port. The hard part is checking
 compatibility for dependent ports and patching them to use guile18 when
 necessary...

 Looking at the list of dependencies:

  * autogen - seems ok with guile20
  * denemo - needs patching
  * g-wrap(16) - seems ok; needs a 18 subport
  * geda-gaf - needs patching
  * gnotime - currently doesn't build
  * gnucash(-devel) - ok
  * harminv - builds ok, haven't tested further
  * InsightToolkit(312/314) - doesn't build
  * libctl - builds ok
  * lilypond(-devel) - needs patching
  * slib-guile(16) - needs updating
  * swig-guile - builds ok, haven't tested
  * taxbird - doesn't build
  * TeXmacs - doesn't build
  * libmatheval - needs patch

 Notice that many of these don't even build now (on my 10.9 system)...
