 fs_usage at the time when this is happening says a lot of 'pread's are
 happening. I would expect that to be true if the query planner change has
 caused our sqlite db to be resorting to (multiple?) table scans instead of
 index lookups.

 Clearly this needs someone to take a look further ;-)
