 Yes, Apple clang-3.0 was just there to show that at some point it time
 there was indeed a clang compiler that was faster than its contemporary
 gcc sibling. The real comparison is OSS llvm 3.4.2 vs. the Apple build of
 the same vs. gcc-4.8 . That latter compiler shows that recent (and much
 more capable) OSS compiler versions can be faster than the older Apple
 variant.
