 This may be a red herring but I believe it is the case that  if
 `-isysroot` is supported by the compiler chain, like Apple's compilers do,
 you can always use just `/` as the SDK path if the system headers have
 been installed by the Command Line Tools.  So you might be able to have it
 both ways: use a real SDK path (like from `xcodebuild -version -sdk macosx
 Path`), when it is available or desired, otherwise just use `/`.
