 git currently forces installation of the MacPorts perl port. Examining the
 git Makefile, it is possible to install git without Perl by defining
 NO_PERL (https://github.com/git/git/blob/master/Makefile Line 248).

 Would it be possible to add a variant that eliminates the Perl dependency?
 The perl port pulls in a lot of additional dependencies, eliminating it
 would allow for a much shorter and smaller git installation.
