 My recollection is that this type of error is an [https://bugs.debian.org
 /cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=741767 incompatibility with readline 6.3].
 First of all, we should try to update the port; the developers may already
 have fixed this. See #43252 for another issue that would be caused by
 updating the port.
