 depend on them; there are certainly many, but nowhere near “almost every”
 one.

 While I admit a bit of an exaggeration, a huge number of ports have
 dependency chains that lead to libgcc. This has broken all kinds of ports
 for me ranging from py##-lxml to texlive-latex-recommended.
